Do HEPA filters actually help allergies?
Short answer: yes — but with a big caveat about where you put it. Here's what HEPA really means, the one spec that actually matters, and which purifiers are worth your money.
The short answer
A true-HEPA air purifier, sized for the room and running in your bedroom during allergy season, measurably reduces overnight pollen exposure and morning symptoms for most people. Three things to get right:
- Make sure it's true HEPA, not "HEPA-type" marketing copy.
- Pick a unit rated for at least two-thirds of your room's square footage (pollen CADR).
- Put it in the bedroom, not the living room.
Do those three, replace the filter on schedule, and skip the "ionizer" button. That's most of it.
What HEPA actually means
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air, and it's a specific, tested filtration standard: a true HEPA filter captures at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns in diameter. That particle size is the hardest for filters to trap; particles both larger and smaller are easier. So a filter that passes at 0.3 µm also passes for everything else.
Pollen grains are 10 to 100 microns — far larger than 0.3 µm — so any true HEPA captures them effortlessly. The same filter also catches pet dander, dust-mite fecal fragments, mold spores, and most bacteria.
Watch for imposters. "HEPA-type," "HEPA-style," "HEPA-like," and "99% efficient at 1 micron" are marketing terms, not the HEPA standard. They will not filter to HEPA specs, and they're usually cheap for a reason. Look for the words True HEPA or the EU equivalent H13 / H14 on the box.
Washable or "permanent HEPA" filters almost always fall below the HEPA standard too. A genuine HEPA filter is a one-time-use dense fiber mat; it can't be meaningfully cleaned.
The one spec that matters: CADR
Clean Air Delivery Rate is the number you actually want. CADR combines filter quality and fan strength into a single usable metric — how many cubic feet per minute of filtered air the unit delivers. Published under the AHAM standard, CADR is reported as three numbers: smoke, dust, and pollen. For allergy purposes, pollen CADR is the one to prioritize.
Rule of thumb: your purifier's pollen CADR should equal at least two-thirds of your room's square footage (assuming standard 8-foot ceilings). A 200-square-foot bedroom needs ~130 CADR. A 400-square-foot room needs ~270.

Don't oversize. An XL unit in a bedroom wastes money, moves more air than you need, and runs louder at every fan setting. Match the room; don't buy the biggest thing you can afford.
Placement: where to put it
One unit? Put it in the bedroom. You spend eight or more hours in there during the worst exposure window — overnight, with the body recovering and the nose working against last-evening's accumulated pollen. Every other room is a secondary concern.
Within the room:
- Leave at least six inches of clearance on every side (intake and exhaust both).
- Don't tuck it behind furniture. It can't filter air it can't reach.
- Ideally between your bed and the bedroom door, so it filters the air coming in.
- Run it on a low or medium fan speed during sleep — high moves more air but makes more noise than a properly-sized unit needs. On low, a correctly-sized purifier cycles your room's air every 15–30 minutes, which is plenty.

Filter maintenance
- Pre-filter (catches larger debris before the HEPA): vacuum monthly with the upholstery attachment.
- True HEPA filter: replace every 6–12 months depending on manufacturer spec and how heavily the unit runs. 24/7 use wears filters faster than overnight-only use.
- Activated carbon filter (for odors): replace every 3–6 months. Less critical than the HEPA for pollen, but cheap.
- A purifier with a clogged filter is just moving dirty air through the room. The single most common way HEPA "stops working" is the owner not replacing the filter on schedule.
What to skip
Ionizers and "ionic" purifiers. Generate trace ozone, which is a lung irritant. The EPA specifically warns against ozone-producing purifiers. If your unit has a button labeled "ionizer," "ion," or "plasma," leave it off — or pick a different unit.
Standalone UV lights. UV kills bacteria on a surface with sustained exposure. Air moving past a UV bulb is there for milliseconds — not enough for meaningful effect. It's a marketing feature, not a filtration feature.
"Ozone generators" marketed as purifiers. Actively harmful at the concentrations needed to "clean" air. Not appropriate for occupied spaces under any circumstance.
"Negative-ion" room diffusers. Not filtration. Doesn't catch pollen. At best useless, at worst ozone-adjacent.
When a filter isn't enough
A HEPA purifier is a meaningful help, not a cure. If you're running one and still symptomatic, the full playbook is daily second-generation antihistamine + daily intranasal steroid + HEPA in the bedroom + behavioral fixes (morning windows closed, shower before bed, weekly pillowcase wash during heavy pollen weeks). If you've stacked all that for three or four weeks and symptoms are still interfering with sleep or work, see a board-certified allergist — immunotherapy (allergy shots or under-the-tongue tablets) is the closest thing to a real long-term fix.
